A new sensor for La Gilberta

Today we installed the Mindsets UK SEP seismometer which will replace the S13 sensor in our educational seismic station.

lehman-seismometerThis horizontal seismometer uses electromagnetic induction to detect ground motion (velocity) and eddy currents to damp oscillations. It is based on the Lehman Seismometer Pendulum, a rotational system slightly tilted from vertical, also called garden gate configuration.  The angle \theta between \overrightarrow{g} and the rotation axis determines the period of the oscillations

T = 2 \pi \sqrt{L/(g \sin \theta)}

Our seismometer is configured to work with a period of about 10 s. We are now testing it in a temporary location. We look forward to see some signals!
